  • New to long-term sciatic pain, help appreciated: What feelings am I being protected from? I journal and am very open to exploring my feelings, my childhood experiences, my issues with raising 3 almost adult kids, a husband, pets, a home, work, parents, friends, and all that .... but in spite of that, it's not enough.... yet!
  • The stress of motherhood: I think a parent should definitely play with the children, but not all the time!! I think it's healthier for mother and child to each have alone time. It allows the mother time to do adult things, and gives the child time to learn to be alone, and not have constant stimulation.
  • Disc Extrusions and TMS: There is a readiness factor in accepting that our emotions/past are causing our physical pain (took a few weeks for this to sink in for me). One question I can ask you is: when the pain got bad, what was going on in your life at that time? What conflict? I know what it was for me!
  • Difficult recovery from Tension Myositis Syndrome: In many of my patients the personality characteristics described by Sarno as common in TMSers come from the same place as the stress that is causing their pain. That place is experience as a child that knocked their self-esteem down on a long-term basis.
  • The Presence Process, by Michael Brown: I realized, I was expecting the quick fix. This process, in many ways, reminds me of applying Dr. Sarno's information. That hasn't been a quick fix either, but worth the effort and I continue to benefit from it.

My name is Pam Benison and I have been in the field of Mindbody therapy for over 30 years as a psychotherapist. I personally experienced relief from intermittent low back pain after reading Dr. Sarno's book, Healing Back Pain, back in the mid 90's. It was with great joy that I discovered Dr. Howard Schubiner's book, Unlearn Your Pain. It has been the much needed practical guide to keeping my patient's clear about their true diagnosis. I will be presenting a class for people interested in the Denver area in April or May. It will be divided into three parts--with three different specialists. Part one will be presented by a neuroscientist to discuss the role of the brain, I will present part two regarding the powerful role of the mind and exercises designed to confront pain with realistic antidotes--Dr. Schubiner's book will be used to highlight this approach, the third part will be called, "Movement as Medicine," presented by Jessica Wolfe, to get reacquainted with our bodies through movement. Since I have been working with pelvic pain patients, this will be taught with the blessing of Dr. Nel Gerig who is the founder of Pelvic Solutions in Denver, Co.
