TMS Discussion Threads
The following is a list of links to some of the better discussions from our old forum. However, we encourage you to visit our new forum instead.

  • Tumor on toe: "I noticed a lump on my 4th toe which I have just had diagnosed as a calcified Brown Cell Tumor on the tendon sheath. My specialist wants to cut it out but warns that they may have to amputate the toe if the tumor has attached to the blood vessels. Is there any chance this could be a TMS type thing or do I have to accept the evidence? The trouble with having had success with the mind body approach, it's difficult to know if a condition is caused by TMS or not."

  • Nerve pain after lung biopsy: "Four years ago, a couple of weeks after a lung biopsy (3 hole laproscopy), when the post-surgical pain decreased and I stopped the pain meds, I noticed a different kind of pain which feels like a piano wire circling my right side, back and sternum and tightening, burning and stabbing. It never stops hurting, but it can get worse (crushing) when I am stressed. Respiratory rehab exercises made it worse (especially lifting even light weights). I am in psychoanalytic psychotherapy 2x weekly and have been for years."

  • The importance of EXPLORING OUR CHILDHOOD: "Dr. Sarno tells his patients that our “overflowing beaker” of rage is made up of three components: 1/3 childhood, 1/3 current stressors, and 1/3 our personality. When I first wrote out my “list” as prescribed by Dr. Sarno, it did not include childhood issues as I had enough currently going on to consume my writing time. But as things were uncovered in my journaling, I realized that when a couple girls picked on me in 4th grade for being the new kid, it hurt my feelings."

  • Fear of Walking: "I've had sciatica for 7 years and I know it's TMS as I have had a history of other psychosomatic problems. Also when it started seven years ago it was at the moment of worst stress ever-the day I saw my mum for the last time. My biggest problem is walking. I developed a fear of it and, depending on how stressed I feel, I start getting tired and dragging the foot after 10 to 20 minutes. At it's worst I look quite disabled which makes it worse as I feel people notice it."

  • The Presence Process: "For those people considering the Presence Process I just wanted to tell you what I learned along the way...PP helped me to understand “Why does this keep happening to me?” And how to do something about it. PP helped me understand that I should not ignore the physical or emotional pain, or fear it, resist, or sedate it (with drugs or alcohol). It suggests that we should feel our pain and discomfort rather than running from it. I now understand that TMS was my body’s way of getting my attention so that I could get my life in balance."

Hello everyone,

I am new here. I have been reading through the threads on this forum and its great that you guys are helping each other.

I am in India and I have been suffering from a mild weakness on the right side of my body (right arm and legs and slight twitching in my right eye) over the last 2 years. Its hardly a weakness - because i can use the right hand to lift heavy weights and I swim regularly. But I have noticed that the weakness gets slightly acute when I feel angry at someone or something. I have these intense and tremendous bouts of internal rages after which I get the slight weakness on the right side of my body. I am generally known as a quite, harmless type among my colleagues at work - but then they dont really know much about my internal rages.

I have been to a neurologist as well as an orthopedecian. The neurologist said he could not find anything wrong with me and told me to come back if the weakness got worse. And the truth is that it hasnt really got any worse but it hasnt gone away either.

What the orthopedician said was even more interesting. I was worried sick about the weakness and wanted to do a brain MRI (fear of brain haemmorhage). But the orthopedician said a brain MRI would be a waste of time and money and that I looked like someone who was extremely stressed out and was worrying/fearing too much about my illness. He prescribed a mood enhancer. He did some basic tests on my hands and legs for signs of weakness and concluded that the problem was in my mind. I also suffer from stuttering, so he said the reason for the weaknes could be intense stress at work. I work as a financial analyst of equities and my job involves a lot of pressure.

I did some research on the internet and came across the medscape.com interviews with Dr.John Sarno and realized that I could be suffering from TMS. Because I feel weak only during and after my internal rages.
