The above was published in 1997. Dr. Evans recommended it to me. I got a copy from the library and read it. I liked it, and went to Barnes and Noble to purchase it. They did not have this in stock, but instead had a copy of “Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of Your Body” by the same author. This is an updated version of Dr. Levines original work in “Waking the Tiger, Healing the Trauma”. This newer one was published in 2008. The advantage of the 2008 “version” is that it is an easier read, more updated and it comes with a CD. So you can load it on your ipod and take it with you.

I found the approach fascinating, easy to do and it works. Dr. Levine provides a simple step by step methodology anyone can use for themselves. Also, you can do it at the pace that is comfortable for you.

BUT, like anything, you need to read it, do it and commit to it. Don’t expect to read this book once and be “fixed”. If you stick with it and make it part of your life you can expect to become less activated, more regulated and more resilient.

Dr. Levines work is one of the methodologies I use. I highly recommend it. I also use mindfulness, meditation, continued help from Dr. Evans and interacting with other folks who have TMS.

MatthewNJ,

Thanks for the review. I just ordered it from Amazon.

Just for the record, the publication date is 2006, according to Amazon.

Correction.

I ordered the wrong book. The one I ordered was from 2006:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1591792479/ref=oss_product

The one MattewNJ was referring to is 2008:

http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Trauma-Pioneering-Program-Restoring/dp/159179658X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268268910&sr=8-1

It looks like I ordered the original hardcover and they republished it later as a paperback. The paperback is cheaper. That's what I would have ordered if I were less unconscious.

I have meditated for years, but I stopped years ago. I really would much rather do CBT-style writing than meditation. Meditation never did anything for me other than make me more aware of my symptoms. But, hey, I still have my symptoms, so I guess I can be open to trying it again.

Thanks to MatthewNJ for pointing out to me that his stated publication date was correct.

Hi, unconscious....

I know how you feel about meditation... I've tried it and didn't like it either. I just found that it was an awful lot of work! Do you think it might be possible to do it in a way that would allow you more to let go of your symptoms? I think that that is at least how it's supposed to work.

Well, when you do get a chance to read the book (or even as you're reading it), please do check back in to tell us what you think of it.

By the way, what do you all think about making this thread a bit of a discussion thread about the book? TMS Wiki threads are really cool in that whenever someone makes a new post in the thread, everyone else who is "watching" the thread gets an email to let them know about it. By default, whenever you post to a thread, you start "watching" the thread (unless you uncheck "watch this thread"). Also, when you click on the thread and see the whole thing, near the top of the page is a link to watch or unwatch the page if you are logged in...

....Anyway, this makes wiki threads really good for making mini discussion groups about very specific topics. Would people be okay with making this thread an official discussion group for this book as it relates to TMS? No one would ever have to respond, and you can always just unwatch the thread whenever you want, but a really great conversation could come out of it. (As an example of a terrific conversation like this, check out the Presence Process thread:

Being aware of your symptoms, takes you right down the track Dr. Peter Levine is talking about. Go FOR IT! When referring to meditation, I believe it was Dr. Jon Kabat-Zin who said, it is ironic how much work it takes to do nothing. But this brings up a good point. How much are you willing to do to rid yourself of TMS? I find that I need to work at it every day. For me, meditaion in un itself does not make my pain go away. Nor do I meditate to get rid of pain. I meditate to learn to be more mindful and in the moment. Mindfulness and being in the moment leads to being more aware of your "felt sense" (Peter Levine). That leads to being able to be more regulated, less activated and more resilient. Meditatation is also something I have committed myself to, and I am "giving myself this time for me" every day. But meditation is only one tool in my box of tricks. Seeing Dr. Sarno, Imagery, journeling, talking/Emailing and meeting other folks with TMS, seeing Dr. Evans, reading different books and processes about TMS are all part of my "lexicon to be TMS free". Dr. Evans says that "it will take approximately one lifetime". I am willing to stay on the path instead of haing pain. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hold on, I'm confused. When I looked at this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Trauma-Pioneering-Program-Restoring/dp/159179658X
it didn't mention anything about a CD. Can anyone confirm that it does come with a CD?

Quert,

That's it. They don't make it clear, but you have the correct book. Look under Product description. The CD is mentioned there.

After reading through these threads, I want to make another comment about meditation. There are many different types. I do the "classic" silent meditation everyone thinks of when they hear meditation. But I also do meditation healing circles, group meditation, guided meditation and Osho's Active meditation. What it comes down to is, SLOOOOWWWWIINNGGGG down and being mindful of YOU. And again I re-iterate what Dr. Kabat-Zin says, it is ironic how hard it is to do nothing. practice, practice, practice!
